Oman Tightens Food Advertising Rules
Muscat: Authorities in Oman have introduced stricter measures governing the online promotion of food products, reminding influencers, businesses, and advertisers that official approval is required before publishing food-related advertisements.
The Food Safety and Quality Center (FSQC) announced that anyone wishing to advertise or promote food items through social media platforms, digital channels, traditional media, or other advertising outlets must first obtain authorisation from the centre.
The requirement applies to a wide range of individuals and organisations, including social media influencers, content creators, advertising agencies, commercial companies, institutions, and food traders.
According to the centre, the regulations are enforced under the Food Safety Law and Ministerial Decision No. 69/2024, which sets out the framework for food registration and promotional activities within the Sultanate.
Officials stressed that compliance with these regulations is essential to safeguard consumers, ensure the accuracy of food-related advertising, and maintain high standards of food quality and safety across the market.
The FSQC also warned that individuals or organisations that fail to comply with the approval requirements may face legal action in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.
To streamline the process, applications for advertising approval must be submitted electronically through the centre’s designated official communication channels before any promotional campaign is launched.
The latest reminder reflects Oman’s continued efforts to strengthen consumer protection, promote responsible advertising practices, and uphold confidence in the country’s food industry.
