Oman Eyes Hong Kong Comeback
CHUZHOU, China: Oman’s national youth handball team is determined to make a strong comeback when it faces Hong Kong in its second Group Stage fixture of the 19th Asian Men’s Youth Handball Championship, following a tough opening defeat against Saudi Arabia.
The prestigious tournament, hosted in Chuzhou, China, also serves as the official Asian qualification event for the 2027 IHF Men’s Youth World Championship, scheduled to take place in North Macedonia.
Oman Shows Fighting Spirit Despite Opening Defeat
Oman began its campaign against one of Asia’s most experienced youth handball teams, Saudi Arabia, eventually losing 40-27. While the final score favored the Saudis, the Omani squad delivered an encouraging second-half performance that showcased resilience, improved teamwork, and growing confidence.
Saudi Arabia established early control of the match with a fast-paced attacking display and solid defensive organization. Oman struggled to settle during the opening half as several promising attacks were intercepted, allowing the Saudi side to build a commanding 23-9 halftime advantage.
Improved Second Half Offers Optimism
After the interval, Oman returned with renewed determination and a far more disciplined approach. The players tightened their defensive structure, moved the ball more effectively, and converted scoring opportunities with greater consistency.
The team’s improved attacking rhythm and quicker defensive transitions helped them compete much more evenly during the second period, earning praise from the coaching staff despite the defeat.
Several players impressed with their attacking contributions, including Mohammed Al Maimani, Saeed Al Hassani, and Mamoon Al Hassani, who consistently challenged the Saudi defense throughout the contest.
Valuable Experience for the Young Omani Squad
Although Saudi Arabia ultimately secured a comfortable victory, Oman demonstrated significant progress after the break, highlighting the team’s ability to adapt tactically and recover mentally against one of the continent’s strongest opponents.
The coaching staff believes the experience gained from the opening fixture will prove valuable as the young squad continues its journey in the championship.
Focus Shifts to Crucial Hong Kong Clash
Attention now turns to Oman’s upcoming match against Hong Kong, where the team will be aiming to register its first victory of the tournament and strengthen its chances of progressing in the competition.

Amir Saif Abdullah Al Dughishi, Board Member of the Oman Handball Association, Supervisor of the National Teams, and Head of Delegation, said the opening fixture unfolded largely as anticipated given Saudi Arabia’s status as one of Asia’s leading youth handball nations.
He noted that the Omani players showed encouraging character after halftime, responded positively to the tactical adjustments, and gained valuable experience that will benefit them in the remaining matches of the championship.
